Hearty Chunks of Christmas Cheese and More

There are differing approaches to buying cheese at Christmas.  Some people like a big variety of smaller pieces of cheese and although we tend to steer our customers in our shops towards a smaller selection of larger chunks as they will keep better over the festive period, the lure of variety is strong.

On the other hand, there is something incredibly attractive and let's face it, audaciously fun, about basing your Christmas cheeseboard around an outrageously big chunk of one particular cheese.  If you know that there are Comte fans in your household or that everyone loves a bit of Stilton then why not go for it?

To that end, we have a few seasonal discounts that, at this time of year, we apply in our shops, markets and this year, online as well.  Read on.

WHOLE SOFT CHEESES

DONGÉ BRIE, 2.6kg : £100

The weight we list this as is 2.6kg but in actual fact this year they're much closer to 3kg so if you're having a big gathering, this is an even better bargain than usual.

ST NECTAIRE LAITIER, 1.4kg : £50

TOMME DE VACHE, 1.4kg : £45

TOMME DE CHAMBROUZE, 1.4 kg : £85

A HANDSOME HUNK OF HAFOD

(Click on the name below to order)

HAFOD CHEDDAR (HALF), 4.5kg : £190

BEHOMITHIC BLUES

(Click on the cheese name to order)

COLSTON BASSETT STILTON (HALF), 3.8kg : £137.50

COLSTON BASSETT STILTON (WHOLE), 7.6kg : £275

1924 (HALF), 1.05kg : £55

BLEU D'AUVERGNE (HALF), 1.05kg : £40

ROQUEFORT (HALF), 1.2kg : £65

If those are bit big for your Christmas needs, you can always get 1kg or in some cases 2kg chunks of Beaufort, BergkaseCantal Entre Deux, Comte, Gruyere AOP, Kirkham's Lancashire, L'Etivaz, Marechal, Pitchfork Cheddar or Sparkenhoe Red Leicester as well as Colston Bassett Stilton (1/8th is roughly a kilo).  If you fancy going bigger on your Stilton then a quarter cheese also does look magnificent as a centrepiece (roughly 1.9kg).

And of course it wouldn't be Christmas without a Vacherin Tyrode.

OTHER CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS

Evidently cheese inspires!  We have among our colleagues and former colleagues, 3 authors now.

Emma Young's THE CHEESE WHEEL is a great guide to the beginner cheese lover with informative accounts of different cheeses and how to put together a selection whether just a great variety or themed to a certain topic.  She also put together a selection of some of her favourite cheeses to go with the book.

Ned Palmer's A CHEESEMONGER'S TOUR DE FRANCE is an informative and fascinating voyage around France taking in its cheese traditions around the different regions and how different cheeses have become associated with the various regions of France.  He too put together a selection to accompany his book.

Finally, our newest author, Michael Finnerty, who you will still see behind the counter at our Borough Market shop penned an affectionate tribute to how a chance job while taking a sabbatical from a career in journalism and broadcasting gave him insight into a whole new world and a glorious group of enthusiastic customers.  His book, THE CHEESE CURE, is also available in our shops and online and he too has suggested a selection of cheeses that came to mean a lot to him in his voyage of discovery.
